Let us consider now mode II loading,

at a framing rate of 400 kfps and an impact velocity of 42 m/s.

Note that this is a one point impact experiment, and the initial notch is loaded parallel to its flank(s) such as to generate mode II (shear). What is interesting is that the struts that fail initially are situated opposite the notch, which fails last. So, here too, the notch (crack) plays no significant role, just as we observed earlier in mode I. Watch on YouTube / Courtesy of Yahav Boim and Dr. Amnon Shirizly.
