A warm welcome to our latest addition to the group: Evgeni Viluska who will investigate the mechanics of ULTEM for his masters, under the joint supervision of Dr. Y. Rotbaum and Prof. D. Rittel

modelling in a real implant geometry, with special emphasis on the evolution of the elastic properties and the resulting resonant frequencies as would be measured by clinicians. The paper, in press in Acta Biomaterialia, is co-authored by S. Gershov (Techinon), Jing Xie (Beijing Inst. Technology), Keren Shemtov Yona (TAU/Technion) and Furqan Ali Shah (Goteborg University). Comparing the kinetics of the BIC evolution and of the bone-implant gap closure (distance and contact osseointegration), it becomes evident that as long as this gap is not "solidified", the load cannot be efficiently transferred from the implant to the bone, which indicates that this evolution is the primary factor to consider rather than the BIC. A new paper compares the respective performance of single pixel infrared detectors and high speed IR cameras. As high speed IR cameras are increasingly used, such a comparison is timely.

Today, we welcomed a joint delegation from AFRL with Dr. M. Gonzales and Dr. Major Swanson, ONR and IMOD to present our collaborative activities aimed at characterizing the impact behavior of a new USAF high strength steel. This is part of our THEOREM project together with our colleagues of U. Carlos 3 of Madrid. The visit comprised a brief description of the main results  so far and a lab. visit.

Dr. K. Shemtov-Yona presented our joint research (with A. Shavit) on the issue of biocompatibility of titanium dental implants at PER-IADR Conference in Marseille. The essence of the research consists in identifying the mechano-chemical signature of peri-implantitis by an array of high resolution analysis techniques of retrieved implants.

It is with great sadness that I heard of the passing away of my former colleague, Prof. Pierre Berest, who was the Director of the Laboratoire de Mecanique des Solides (Ecole Polytechnique) during the years I spent there. Pierre was an accomplished scientist and a true gentleman as well as a very kind person. He will be missed!
